In class I teach the 4 rules of self-defense that my instructor taught me:

1. Stay away from bad people and bad places.
2. Talk your way out of it.
3. Run away.
4. If rules 1-3 fail, WIN!

I also teach my students that they can only react with as much force as is needed to control
a situation. That may mean a jury might have to decide if you used too much force. A large
part of self-defense is self-control. Otherwise you may become the bad guy in a situation.
